today, harry reid said the republicans are protecting the demands of the special interest groups not agreeing to close tax loopholes to pay for spending. he called for tax reform, and, basically, said that the president wants to close these loopholes to pay for more spending or pay down the deficit. republicans want to deal with tax reform, and this is the first bill passed in the new house with the hr1 tag, the coveted first spot in the house. that's tax reform to get rid of some loopholes and lower tax rates. there's the continued argument there. the bottom line, heading into tomorrow, when the automatic spending cuts take place, you may have congressional leaders at the white house. the senate votes later today, but there is zero movement towards a bipartisan compromise to get it done. nothing is beginning to get through the senate today, and it doesn't seem like anything soon will either. back to you. dagen: rich, thank you for that on capitol hill. connell: more in a few minutes, but shifting gears to another story on fox business, jpmorgan chase holding $2.3 trillion in assets,

[laughter] [laughter] and the bad news is, it was in harry reid's handwriting. [laughter] listen, the message is really simple. we have to start talking to each other. we have to start problems and get rid of the ideology and you've got to be fired up to make it happen. because the partisans are fired up. the forces of division are fired up. the forces that want to pull apart and put us to categories are fired up. there has to be support for people who want to solve problems. who want to tell the truth and want to work a five-day week. who want to do the things we need to do to get the country going. it's what is on the minds of the public. i was the only candidate in the country where people had a real choice. if you stop and think about it. your choices are determined by the parties by and large. and in maine, people had a third choice. in fact, my favorite comment from the whole campaign was guy that came up to me in northern maine one day and said all my life i wanted a chance to vote for none of the above. the deal that we struck on the filibuster, we saw that harry reid and mitch mcconnell struck, is based in part, it expedites some nominations if they come from rogue individual senators or a handful, but it's based in part on a kind of gentleman's agreement that you're not going to misuse the filibuster in nominations in the same way. and if you see a filibuster of hagel in this case where there is a clear majority and more for his confirmation, and you know, think about this, we've got a sequester coming up, which could cause enormous potential damage to national security, you're going to keep the defense secretary from being in place to help to administer that. we've got a war going on. i think you'd have to, if you were in harry reid's shoes, begin to rethink what you're going to do with the rules. >> as an institutional scholar such as yourself, hearing that come from you carries a lot of weight. norm ornstein, resident scholar at the american enterprise institute, co-author of "it's even worse than it looks." thank you for being with us tonight. it's great to have your perspective
